Fishermen & Sharks
This program includes the fishing communities of the Gulf of California and the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur in the management of shark fishing. This program works on the basis of creating a work ethic of conservation in conjunction with the fishing communities and create efforts among scientists, politicians, authorities and local communities to promote sustainable shark and ray fishing in Mexico. In Mexico, shark and ray fishing is an important food and employment resource for fishing communities. To achieve conservation objectives, it is essential to include and rely on the support of communities who rely on this resource for their daily sustenance. IEMANYA has strengthened collaborative relationships with fishermen and their families, convincing them to support the sustainable management of their own natural resources.
To achieve this, different activities are carried out such as:
- Environmental education activities and knowledge of sharks.
- Campaigns in the media.
- Development of different economic alternatives and sources of income.
- Academic scholarships to the children of the fishermen that allow to continue their education from the secondary level
- Inclusion of fishing communities in the development of research.
